CORNELL UNIVERSITY
5-7 MAY 2025

Our third workshop will take place at Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York, United States.

This Cornell-based conference will explore a heterogeneity of pandemic responses, lived experiences, and afterlives. This exploration will happen through a variety of events, including two keynotes, a roundtable discussion and paper presentations.

The first keynote will be by Dr Judith Cutchin, the First Vice President of the New York State Nurses Association, and is titled “COVID-19: A Look Back at the First Five Years from the Frontlines”. The second keynote speaker is Elizabeth Povinelli, an anthropologist and gender studies scholar, at Columbia University. Her keynote is titled “Can There be a Concept of Health Beyond Bios?”.

Essential to understanding the Covid-19 pandemic is to reflect on the relations between humans, animals, and the environment. On the morning of May 7 (10AM -12 PM, ILR Conference Centre 423), a roundtable titled “Perspectives on One Health” will explore these interrelations through the One Health paradigm. Panelists include Professor Raina Plowright (Public & Ecosystem Health), Professor Alex Nading (Anthropology), Professor Juno Salazar Parreñas (Science and Technology Studies), and Alexander J. Travis (Public & Ecosystem Health), who will reflect on the challenges of implementing One Health across local, regional, and global scales, and the role of social science perspectives in thinking about One Health approaches, particularly in the context of pandemic preparedness and response.

On May 5 and May 6 2025, philosophers and anthropologists from around the globe will present papers related to the Covid-19 pandemic and its aftermath with the intention of moving between granular details and overarching context, situating configurations of health, illness, and governance during and after COVID-19. We will see contributions from Soumyabrata Choudhury, Carlo Caduff, Federico Scarpelli, Marco Piasentier, Alex Nading, Frédéric Keck, Timothy Campbell, Yasmeen Arif, Esca van Blarikom, Massimo Villani, Davide Tarizzo, Ann Kelly, and Thomas Cousins.
